Currently in the Netherlands there are only 15% of all the bike theft cases being reported, so the police say. If no report is being made, your bike doesn’t count as stolen then. read more...

Furthermore only the police have access to this system. The intention is to make these informations accessible to everyone. Everyone shall be able to see what has been stolen and what is being looked for. Therefore it is of interest that each bike is being registered with a picture of it.

We cannot avoid bike theft but help that less bike are being stolen and above all that stolen bikes can be refound more rapid. The more bikes are being registered, the harder it gets for bike thieves to sell stolen bikes on the market.

• First have a look in the closer neighbourhood, it could be that it only has been relocated somewhere else by someone. If this is not the case, then ask at the next police station if your bike has eventually been confiscated for some reasons. In some cities there are especially provided collecting points for that.

• If you can’t find your bike and if it has not been confiscated by a bike collecting point, then get your bike data (brand, type, colour, frame number, vignette number) and make a report at the next police station.

Tip: 

If you make a report, your bike will be written out in the central search register. If it gets found, you will automatically be informed unless you already have been indemnified by your insurance (thus your insurance is the new legal owner), then your insurance will be informed.

Important:

After you have made a report, your bike won’t be looked for by the police. A possible locating is accidental.

How fast can one pick a lock?

Correct spelling of the vignette number

05         = the number describes the particular canton (for example: 12 would be Basel)

999983  = the number which can be very important for the identification of your bike

341       = the number of the insurance (for example AXA Winterthur etc.)

11         = the curent year

According to that the correct spelling would be: 12/999983/561/11

With the buying of a valid bike vignette the vehicle will atomatically be protected by a casualty insurance. The precondition herefore is that the vignette is well applied on your bike and good visible from behind.

Let make a winter check at the bike dealer to see if your bike is fit enough for the winter.

This should at least contain

• control the ligths
  
• control the brakes
  
• control the tires
  
• control the bearing and the switching mechanism

Please take note of Art. 216 and 217 (VTS) which says that its prescribed to have a white light at the front and a red ‘dormant’  light at the back.

During the dark season you should wear bright clothes, if possible with additional reflectors. During wet conditions and coldness you have to drive especially careful because it could have clear ice.

According to the federal statistics of criminality, in 2006 there have 370’000 bicycles been stolen in Germany – whereat a high number of unreported cases is being estimated because not all thefts are being reported to the police. The insurance industry estimates the whole damage amounting to 100 million Euros per year.

At the convention of VELOCITY in 2007 which took place in Munich, a referee from France reported that after the local statistics there are annually 400’000 bicycle thefts being reported (this comes up to the numbers of the German statistics).

• 22 % of the injured persons react to a theft with an abandonment of further bicycling.
• 50 % of the injured persons content themselves with the buying of a second-hand bike.

• 50 % of all bike thefts occurin houses/housing areas.

To drive without a valid bike vignette costs a fine of 40 Swiss Franks. But it can get much more expensive if you cause a bodily injury or a material damage with your bike. Therefore the bike vignette is not only obligatory but also reasonable. The vignette is a casualty insurance for third party damage. The vignette doesn’t cover the damage on the own bike and isn’t either a theft insurance. Due date is always the 1^st of June, so you better apply the vignette to your bike on 31 of May (or even earlier). If your vignette gets stolen (or lost), you have to buy a new one. The bike vignette has to be well applied and to be good visible from the back.

Roadworthniness check

With a tour around the house you can test the “vital functions”

• Do the gears let change without difficulty?
• Do the brakes work correctly? Does the front-wheel brake and the rear-wheel brake work faultlessly?
• Do the lights work (by the break of dawn you’ll need them)?
• Are the tires and the inner tubes faultless?

Bike buying at the jumble sale

With the warmer seasons the jumble sale starts again. One can practically buy a bike on every jumble sale. But keep attention!! What do I buy there? Is it maybe a stolen bike?

To play it safe, pay attention to the following points:

With the buying of a bike you should necessarily note the seller’s name and address (ask for an identification card). If the seller won’t do that for you, then keep your hands off that buy!

Note the bike’s data and ask at the next police station if this bike has been reported in the central search register. Like this you can save yourself many turnovers – because it happens from time to time that stolen bikes are being sold at the jumble sale.
