Bike registration as a preventive action against bike theft!
Stolen bicycles find in the rarest cases the way back to their owners. The problem gets worse with the decided abolition of the bike sticker.
Cyclists know that. If one leaves his bike unsupervised for only a few seconds, it could be already stolen. Each year there are approximately about 50‘000 stolen bicycles amounting to 60 millions swiss franks. These are only those bicycles whose owners made a report at the police department. The police calculates with an estimated number of unreported cases that is twice as high. The number of resolved cases of bicycle theft is extremely low. Only three percent of all in Switzerland stolen bicycles return to their original owners. Furthermore there are approximately 50‘000 other bikes that are being collected by different collecting points in whole Switzerland (ERZ Zürich, Central Safeguarding Point for two-wheeler vehicles Basel, Bike Policy Bern etc.). Even those cannot be allocated to anybody.
The small number of resolved cases can be explained by the difficulty of locating the legitimate owners of the picked up bicycles. With the previous bike numbers made of metal sheet this was easier. Each bike had its own number and the name of the owners was registered at the police department. Another difficulty is that many bike owners don’t note neither brand nor vehicle identification number. The allocation and delivery of discovered bicycles is almost impossible that way. In the future the return of picked up and stolen bikes will be more difficult and the number of resolved cases will be lower. Because the National Council has decided on September 22nd of 2010 to abolish the bike sticker. Therewith also the last connection between the public authorities and the cyclists gets lost. Furthermore one of the characteristics disappears after which the picked up bikes could have been identified und returned. The creation of a governmental and central bike register the Swiss Federal Council defeats categorically (see also tv report on sf “10vor10”)
